MIDVALE — An armed suspect who evaded officers during a traffic stop was barricaded in Midvale Friday morning, police said.

The suspect fled after officers attempted a traffic stop near 7500 South and State in Midvale, according to Unified Police Sgt. Aymee Race. The suspect, who is alone, then barricaded themselves in a dump truck.

As of 5:30 a.m., police had ordered nearby residents to shelter in place — and some were evacuated — on Cox Lane near 7420 South while multiple SWAT teams responded to the scene. By 8:30 a.m. investigators remained on scene, but the order had been lifted and police said there was no threat to the public.

Unified police did not describe the suspect or verify their age. No injuries have been reported, but police said the suspect fired the gun at an overhead police drone.

State Street was closed to traffic from 7500 South to 7300 South but has since reopened.

Canyons School District spokesman Jeff Haney said the incident is not affecting any schools, but the district is altering bus routes. Haney added that students in affected areas may be late to school because they’re sheltering in place at their homes, something schools are aware of.

“Students can go to school when it’s safe to do so,” Haney said.
