LAYTON – Sheldon Williams was out Monday afternoon to get his son, Adam, a shake at Jack in the Box when the duo heard a huge noise.
“All of a sudden, it sounded like a bomb went off,” Sheldon Williams told KSL-TV. “Just a huge explosion. I think that was a transformer.”
Just west of the fast food joint near 1000 E. Gentile Street, a driver heading west had slammed through three power poles and flipped his vehicle. Sheldon Williams said dust and debris flew everywhere, and he ran over to see if he could help.
The car was on fire, and the man inside was badly injured.
“I was just so scared for the guy. He was shaking,” Sheldon Williams said. He knew he had to act fast. “The car was on fire, by the way. The car was actually on fire. I could see the smoke.”
He said, despite the chaos, he was able to cut the man’s seatbelt and get him onto the ground just before emergency crews arrived.
There was no word on the man’s condition Monday night, and police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
The incident left over 2,000 people without power for hours. Rocky Mountain Power crews restored about half of that by 8 p.m. They expected all customers’ power to be restored by 11 p.m.
