GEORGIA — There are times when it sounds (and feels) like lightning has struck close. Maybe you’ve been sitting in your house during a storm and heard a boom outside that indicated a nearby strike. Or you might’ve experienced a summer storm in the High Uintas Wilderness and seen lightning strike right over the lake where you’re camping.

The most intense lightning strike I’ve ever witnessed occurred in my front yard one night when I was a kid. We were all in bed, but none of us could sleep due to the howling wind and pounding rain outside.

Suddenly, there was an intense explosion in the yard and our house lit up like it was the middle of the day. We all ran to the front porch and realized that lightning had struck the telephone pole in front of our house. The wood was still smoldering from the impact.

But what if lightning were to hit your car? This video shows a close call in Georgia.

According to the video’s description, this incident happened on Interstate 20 near Atlanta. The footage comes from a videographer who had been shooting a wedding that was cut short because the governor issued a state of emergency due to the incoming storm. While driving home, this lightning nearly caused a state of emergency right inside their vehicle.

I’m always amazed when I see dash footage like this from chaotic events. While most of us would probably be swerving around in terror, the drivers that post their footage are often unfazed by what happened and just keep driving in a calm manner.
