ST. GEORGE — Sean Johnson, the pilot who was one of six people killed in a recent helicopter crash in New York City, was a former student of Southern Utah University, university officials confirmed.

“Southern Utah University is deeply saddened to have learned of the passing of Seankese ‘Sean’ Johnson, a former student in SUU’s Aviation Program,” university spokesperson Brooke Heath said in a written statement. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this time.”

Added Michael Mower, executive director of SUU Aviation: “Sean was an amazing individual, with the heart and willingness to put in the time to reach his goals.”

According to multiple news reports, Johnson was taking a family of five from Spain on a sightseeing tour on April 10 when the Bell 206 craft plunged into the Hudson River, killing everyone aboard.
