ROY — Police responded to a domestic violence call on April 4 and found the victim’s dog severely injured, later dying of injuries.

The man, 27, of Milton, Morgan County, was charged Monday with aggravated cruelty to an animal, a class A misdemeanor, property damage, a class B misdemeanor, and intoxication, a class C misdemeanor.

The man “was upset with the small dog for going to the bathroom inside the residence,” his pregnant girlfriend told police, so the man “grabbed the dog out of the crate and beat the dog,” a police booking affidavit alleges.

A Roy police officer wrote that he “observed the dog, which was a small Yorkie, and the dog’s neck was completely to the side and appeared to have a broken neck.”

The woman who called police said she went into the bedroom and closed the door to call 911 when she saw her boyfriend beating her dog, but he broke down the door, the affidavits states.

Police found the door “broken off the hinges and the wood was damaged,” according to charges, and the man had “a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath and his speech was slurred.”

The injured Yorkie was taken by police and the owner to an emergency veterinary clinic where the dog died. “The vet advised the Yorkie had a traumatic brain injury,” according to the affidavit.
