SALT LAKE CITY — Police arrested a man Tuesday in connection to 2022 shooting death.

Oakland Alope Taoipu Faamoe, 31, was taken into custody Tuesday for investigation of murder, obstruction of justice and felony discharge of a firearm.

On Jan. 23, 2022, Anetupou Niualiku was shot and killed in a parking lot near 130 S. 800 West. Initial reports said Niualiku was 50 when she was killed, but Salt Lake City police’s statement Tuesday said she was 42.

Witnesses saw a white Hyundai Sonata flee the area after shots were fired, police said. The yearslong investigation led to photos of the suspect vehicle being released on March 18 to aid in new leads.

A witness came forward to police with information identifying Faamoe as the person responsible for the homicide.

“The witness also reported another person involved in the incident confessed that Faamoe had committed the shooting,” police said.

Detectives determined Faamoe drove a white Hyundai matching the suspect vehicle description, and Faamoe had received a traffic ticket in that car just days before the shooting death.

Phone records and other evidence also placed Faamoe and the second individual in the area at the time of the homicide. The two were “in direct contact before and after the alleged incident.”

The firearm used in this death has not been located, police said. Anyone with information on the case is encouraged to call police.
