PROVO — At least two pipe bombs were found inside a Provo residence Wednesday after the occupant’s mother called police.

Provo police were called after the mother of a 28-year-old man went to his apartment to look for a set of keys while he was at a local treatment center. While in the apartment, the woman “found what she believed to be pipe bombs and pipe bomb making materials in (her son’s) room,” a police booking affidavit states.

The mother also “found a container that was marked as gunpowder.” Police were contacted and the bomb squad was called out.

“The bomb squad responded to dispose of the two known devices,” according to the affidavit. “Bomb squad personnel are of the opinion that the pipes found were built as a pipe bomb. The configuration of the pipes does not present any other likely use than that of a potential pipe bomb.

“The bomb squad tested the devices and found a powder inside that ignited when a flame was applied to it. Meaning that these pipes contained an explosive powder,” the affidavit continues.

The man was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of two counts of recklessness and possessing an incendiary device.
