SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police arrested a 21-year-old man on Sunday morning in connection with an ongoing homicide investigation.

Police responded to a report of a person who suffered a gunshot wound near 2531 S. 400 East at around 11:40 p.m. on Saturday. The victim, an 18-year-old man, was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

The South Salt Lake Police Department believes Salman Ahmed is connected to that homicide, according to a booking statement.

“(Ahmed) is a person of interest in a homicide investigation that occurred on (Saturday) at 11:40 p.m.,” the police department said.

Ahmed was taken into custody for questioning, South Salt Lake police detective Ryan Alvarez said Sunday.

Court records indicate Ahmed was previously convicted of other crimes, including discharge of a firearm and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person on Nov. 24, 2024; and selling cocaine Sept. 19, 2024.
