MURRAY — A man was shot in the hand by a police officer Thursday after Murray police say he refused to leave an apartment and tried to burn responding officers with aerosol spray and a lighter.
Just after noon, Murray police say they responded to 163 W. Fireclay Avenue to assist in removing a person from the property due to a court-ordered eviction. When officers arrived at the apartment, they found a man had barricaded himself in a bedroom and refused to leave.
“At one point, the subject used an aerosol spray and lighter to propel flames toward officers, and they believed he was attempting to light the bedroom on fire,” a statement from the police department says.
Officers evacuated the apartment building as a precaution and notified the Murray Fire Department of the situation. Officers then broke a window outside the bedroom and deployed “pepper balls” to try to get the man to come out, the statement says.
The man then tried to attack officers with an unidentified weapon, police said, and an officer fired his gun, striking the man in the hand.
Police said the man eventually surrendered and was taken into custody. He was transported to a hospital to treat the injuries on his hand.
The name of the man who was shot was not released Thursday.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated, police said.
