SALT LAKE CITY — Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs says he will not run for reelection this fall.
Staggs made the announcement on both his Facebook and X accounts Tuesday afternoon.
“After 12 years of service – four on the council and eight as your Mayor – I believe I have delivered on my promises,” Staggs said in the post.
In the posts, Staggs cites various things he accomplished throughout his 12 years of service. Among these were improving water quality, establishing the Riverton Police Department, and “driving unprecedented economic development.”
He said he supports term limits and the “biggest threats to our liberty and quality of life come from other layers of government.”
Staggs previously made news when he announced his bid for Sen. Mitt Romney’s Senate seat in May 2024. In his campaign, Staggs called himself a fighter and “someone unafraid to stand against the Washington establishment.” Ultimately, Romney’s seat went to Rep. John Curtis.
Staggs also ran for Salt Lake County Mayor in 2020 but lost to Mayor Jenny Wilson.
“I look forward to seeing who will be willing to step up and file in June to serve as our next mayor, and hope to support someone who can carry on from these past 12 years,” Staggs said.
