SALT LAKE CITY ā A Salt Lake man accused of beating his dog is now facing a felony charge.
Jarveman McCray, 35, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with torture of a companion animal, a third-degree felony, and aggravated cruelty to an animal, a class A misdemeanor.
The investigation began on Jan. 8 at a downtown apartment building, 245 S. State, when a man found feces in the hallway by the elevator. The man “watched security surveillance footage in order to determine how the feces got there. He saw on the video tenant Jarveman McCray slamming his dog Chloe against the wall repeatedly and attempting to step on her head,” according to charging documents.
An officer with Salt Lake County Animal Services was shown the video and went to McCray’s apartment to take the dog into protective custody.
“McCray said that he hurt the dog because she bit him earlier. McCray refused to turn in the dog initially, but then gave her to (the officer) to take her to the shelter and for a veterinary exam,” the charges state.
The exam found the dog was “very sensitive around her armpits and tender to the touch on her ribs,” the charges say.
Court documents do not provide any other information about the dog, including breed or age.
