TOOELE — A Tooele man has been arrested and is accused of assaulting a family member and not doing anything to save his dog from a fire.

Michael James Marshall, 47, was booked into the Tooele County Jail on Wednesday for investigation of assault and cruelty to an animal.

On Wednesday, Tooele County sheriff’s deputies were called to investigate a report of domestic violence. Officers learned that a woman had been pushed to the ground by Marshall “and punched in the head and face an estimated 20 times,” according to a police booking affidavit.

After Marshall was taken into custody, deputies also learned that his truck had started on fire.

“Inside the truck was Michael’s bulldog Duke, who died inside the truck because of the fire. Michael was in the area of the truck, knew it was on fire and neglected to save Duke,” the affidavit alleges.

The arrest report does not say how the fire started.
